Ray Wilson is a Melbourne-based artist whose evocative oil paintings are grounded in a deep appreciation of light, place and the Australian landscape.

Working predominantly from life, Ray embraces the traditions of tonal realism, drawing inspiration from early Australian painters and the teachings of Max Meldrum. His approach is deliberately simple and painterly, capturing the essence of his subject with as few gestural brushstrokes and details as he feels are necessary.

Ray paints across the genres of still life, portraiture and plein air landscape. His landscapes reveal a particular sensitivity to the diversity of the Australian countryside, from rugged, moody coastlines to rural vistas dappled with changing light and cloud. His still life works demonstrate the same thoughtful observation, celebrating the quiet beauty of everyday objects through considered composition, tone and light.

Ray has enjoyed long-term mentorship from Ray Hewitt and Stephen Doyle and is a Fellow and Signatory Member of the Victorian Artists Society. His work is held in collections across Australia and overseas, with recent accolades including Best in Show at the Royal Melbourne Show 2026.
