John Stewart

Woodwork

John Stewart’s woodwork practice is grounded in sustainability, craftsmanship and a deep respect for the stories held within timber. Working predominantly with fallen Australian River Red Gum — some over 400 years old — Stewart transforms reclaimed native wood into beautifully handcrafted functional pieces. Rich in character, grain and history, the timber reflects the enduring beauty of Australia’s inland river landscapes, where Red Gum forests continue to face increasing environmental pressure.

Alongside his River Red Gum works, Stewart also creates distinctive skateboard plates from retired Canadian rock maple skateboards. Preserving the original graphics, scratches and wear marks, each piece celebrates the energy and culture of skateboarding while giving discarded boards a vibrant second life.

Balancing artistry with functionality, Stewart’s works are designed to be admired and used. Finished by hand with food-safe tung oil, each piece is unique and should be cared for by avoiding direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
