John Eagle

Ceramics

John Eagle is widely recognised for his contribution to Australian ceramics, particularly his dedication to refined, functional pottery. A graduate of RMIT, he gained early attention through the landmark Craft Victoria ’75 exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria, later receiving the National Bicentennial Art‑Craft Award for Functional Pottery in 1988 and Craft Mark accreditation in the 1990s.

Working primarily in stoneware and porcelain, John creates vessels that balance strength, simplicity and subtlety. His signature copper red glazes, achieved through complex firing techniques using metallic oxides and rare earth minerals at around 1300°C, produce rich, atmospheric surfaces that embrace the unpredictability of the kiln.

Through his writing, mentoring and exhibitions across Australia and overseas, John has become a respected figure in the ceramics community. His work reflects a quiet, meditative connection to the Australian landscape and the integrity of the handmade.

“The satisfaction of making and the enjoyment of others using the finished piece is, to me, as good as it gets.” – John Eagle
