Emily Whitton – Popglass

Jewellery, Glass

After graduating from the University of Tasmania’s School of Art in 2001, Emily Whitton followed her father, Robert Clark into the art-glass world, first working as his apprentice, then developing her own designs; Popglass Jewellery was born. Emily creates her colourful range from her studio nestled in Evandale, Tasmania.  A stunning fusion of dichroic glass, each piece is handmade, kiln fired and finished with sterling silver earring posts and silver plated pendant chains.

Dichroic glass is different from regular glass; it changes colour with the light and can appear opalescent.  Dichroic glass is made from the fusion of ultra thin layers of different metals and oxides onto glass.  These elements include gold, silver, titanium, chromium, aluminium, zirconium, magnesium and silica.  Quartz crystal and the metal oxides are vaporized with an electron beam gun in an airless vacuum chamber and the vapor then floats upward and condenses on the surface of the glass in the form of a crystal structure.
