Emily Whitton – Popglass

Jewellery

Popglass Jewellery is designed and made by Emily Whitton, Tasmania.

Emily enjoys creating her fabulous works from a beautiful studio nestled in the valleys of White Hills, Northern Tasmania.  She works predominantly with Dichroic glass, fusing her designs in a kiln.  Popglass earrings are finished with sterling silver hooks and posts; pendants feature on silver plated chains.  Each piece is unique, created with flair and passion.

Dichroic glass is very special; different from regular glass due to the fact that it contains multiple colours and can even appear opalescent.

  • It changes colour with the light and the angle at which it is held.
  • It is made by using multiple ultra thin layers of different metals including gold and silver also oxides of such metals as titanium, chromium, aluminium, zirconium, magnesium and silica.
  • The coating process is completed in a vacuum deposition chamber by vaporizing the quartz and metal oxides with an electron beam gun and condensing micro thin layers on the surface of the glass in the form of a crystal structure.
  • The finished glass may have up to 30 to 50 layers of these materials yet the thickness of the coating is approximately 30 to 35 millionths of an inch, so an extremely thin layer onto the glass.
  • Glass fusing is a technique in which 2 pieces of glass are joined together at a very high temperature using a kiln.
  • The Fusing process requires a special type of glass. Specifically, the different glasses you use must all be compatible with each other so that the glass fuses together.
