Mary Hennekam, originally from Reading, England, moved to Australia with her Irish parents in 1949. After schooling at Kildare College and Brigidine Teachers College, she became a primary schoolteacher in Victoria. Her teaching career led her back to the UK, where she spent two years as a ‘temp’ teacher some of London’s toughest schools, a challenging experience for a young overseas educator.

Returning to Melbourne, Mary resumed teaching while nurturing a passion for art. Despite running a farm business and raising a family of three children with her husband, she pursued a Fine Arts degree at Prahran Technical College. However, family commitments put her studies on hold for several years.

In the mid-1970s, Mary reignited her interest in art at Frankston TAFE. Unfulfilled by the standard coursework, she sought specialized studies with various accomplished artists. Through these mentorships, she developed her unique artistic style, earning recognition and awards for her work.

Mary Hennekam’s journey reflects her dedication to teaching, family, and her enduring pursuit of art. Her artistic evolution, despite facing interruptions and challenges, showcases her perseverance and well-deserved success as an award-winning artist.
