History of Town & Country Gallery
Town & Country Gallery was opened in October 1989 by local textile artist, Tini Cook. The first art gallery in Yarragon, Town & Country was situated where Tritec Art & Craft now operates. The gallery was established as an outlet to showcase quality, local Gippsland and Victorian original fine art and hand-crafted works.
In 1997 the move was made to the new purpose-built gallery at 111 Princes Hwy., from where the gallery still operates. Current directors John & Jo Wolswinkel have owned the gallery since 2004. Jo has been involved with the gallery since 1996.
Over the 25+ years of operation the emphasis to source and showcase the highest quality Australian contemporary art and hand-crafted works has endured and the gallery enjoys a fine reputation with the artists it supports and the customers who repeatedly visit from local and regional areas, interstate and overseas.
Through the years the gallery has expanded its range to include professional artists from around Australia, many with links to the Gippsland region. Larger, vibrant contemporary paintings, a superb range of etchings and limited edition prints now also feature in the gallery’s impressive collection of fine art. Hand-blown glass, ceramics, quirky sculptures, Australian hardwood furniture, inspirational books and cards and exquisite hand-crafted jewellery have also been hand-picked to complete a very exciting visual experience – offering something for everyone.
What we offer
The relaxed ambiance of the gallery creates a respectful freedom for customers to interact with the artworks, books and jewellery. Niches have been created – to read, to touch, to ‘try on’, to view or to just sit and absorb the beauty.
The gallery’s opening hours 10am-5pm every day except Christmas day, ensures that Yarragon is a good place to stop and stretch your legs and enjoy an inspirational browse to highlight your day. Easy access by rail and ample parking are catered for with spaces allocated for buses, vans, boats and trailers.
A complimentary gift-wrapping service is greatly appreciated by gallery customers, many of whom pass through on their way to a wedding or event knowing they will always find a unique and appropriate gift, with gift cards and wrapping catered for. Many businesses make Town & Country Gallery their one-stop-shop to purchase gifts for overseas clients or for that special retirement gift or presentation. Commissions are welcome, frequently arranged with artists on behalf of customers seeking something unique and personal. Gift Vouchers are popular, with ‘no time limit’ providing opportunity for the voucher recipient to wait until the perfect ‘piece’ or painting is created for them.
The gallery is happy to organise freight around Australia and overseas, ensuring that irreplaceable artworks arrive at the intended destination in perfect condition. Larger works and furniture are personally delivered by John within the Gippsland and Melbourne metropolitan areas.
Town & Country Gallery regularly host exhibitions and artist demonstrations. These events prove to be very popular – please add your name and contact details to the gallery data base to ensure you are kept informed.
