Ralf Kempken

painting

Born in Germany in 1961, Ralf Kempken’s artistic journey began in inner-city Melbourne, where he focused on portraiture and developed a distinctive style using multi-layered stencils derived from his own photographs and drawings. Guided by the concept that we filter all we see through past experiences and memories, his work evolved to include landscapes and streetscapes. Painting full-time since 2001, Ralf completed a Diploma of Visual Arts at RMIT in 2005. Inspired by urban landscapes and iconic Melbourne streets, Ralf’s artworks are rich in depth and variation. Applying his meticulously hand-cut acetate stencils, he layers spray-painted tones onto canvas to create perspective and mood. Through his art, Ralf transforms everyday scenes into layered visual narratives, inspiring viewers to reimagine the world around them.
