Lois Joy Brown
26.05.1953 – 20.05.2018

Lois Brown was a true artist who spent over thirty years studying, painting & teaching in the medium of watercolour.  It is often said, watercolour is the hardest medium to use, but it was Lois’ choice for capturing the many moods of the unique & varied Gippsland environment in which she lived.

Lois worked by firstly sketching her scenes in pencil & watercolour on site, then on returning to her studio, these impressions were developed into technically excellent, yet spontaneous-feeling works on paper.  Her paintings have the ability to take us to the site from which she sat to capture the view… sweeping beaches of Wilsons Prom, the grand alpine regions, boats moored at the Gippsland Lakes or just an intimate moment of a butterfly gracefully resting on gum-blossom.  Lois Brown studied the techniques of old masters; her work is reminiscent of paintings from the 19th century – combining the eye of the artist with the skill of the crafts-person to capture a moment in an ever-changing landscape.
