Laurel Foenander was born in 1960 and began seriously painting in 1995. She is a passionate gardener and has a deep affection for the native birds which live and froli’c in the garden of her West Gippsland home in rural Victoria. Exploring many mediums, Laurel works with the vivid hues and tactile qualities of dry pastel, acrylics and oils to indulge her passion for colour and to ‘bring to life’ her well researched and exquisitely detailed bird and wildlife studies.
Laurel loves to capture the individual characteristics of Australian native birds and depicts them with extraordinary realism in their natural habitats, local gardens and farmland vistas. Laurel hopes her portrayal of the uniqueness and beauty of native birdlife may encourage the viewers’ own awareness and appreciation of the birds that are often part of our everyday environment. The importance of the relationship that exists between humans, wildlife and nature is a strong element of Laurel’s works. In recent years Laurel has enjoyed bringing the ‘carnival-colours’ and ‘holiday’ atmosphere of Philip Island, Victoria to her works.
Laurel’s paintings have gained many accolades and awards throughout Australia. Her work is represented in collections throughout Australia and overseas.
