John Mutsaers was born in Eindhoven, Holland, in 1942. Paint must run through his veins, with generations of artists on both sides of his family. John migrated to Melbourne in 1956.
As a boy the works of Jan Steen, Jan Vermeer, Vincent van Gogh and Kees Bol roused John’s interest in painting. He spent two summer schools at the National Gallery Art School with artists Ian Bow and Clifton Pugh who also had an early influence on his work. During John’s career he has been inspired by a variety of styles and artists including Australian notables such as Archie Colquhoun, Max Meldrum and Fred Williams. John spent four years under the tutelage of John Balmain, who taught him composition and the principles of tonal painting. He admires sculptors such as Robert Klippel, Bruce Armstrong and Geoffrey Bartlett.
