Drawings & Sculptures
23 April – 29 May 2016
JANET MATTHEWS DRAWING DEMONSTRATION : 2-4pm Sunday 29 MAY 2016
Janet Matthews & Darren Gilbert don’t just share gallery space this exhibition… it is immediately evident that both incredibly talented artists share a profound sensitivity for our natural landscape and wildlife… a fascination that compels them to express their wonder and passion through their chosen mediums of pencil, pen & ink drawing and sculpture.
It takes more than just a ‘good-eye’ and raw talent to produce works of such originality and exceptional quality as Janet Matthews’ and Darren Gilbert’s. Both artists work from the heart, committing hours and hours to bring their vision to life, each of their works an individual statement of their unique perspective of our natural world.
Janet Matthews’ visual stories in pencil are captivating, drawing the viewer in close to marvel at her masterful technique and then imaginatively unfolding the ‘conversation’ between her wildlife subjects, often with much humour. It’s not just the technically perfect features of Janet’s birds and wildlife that make a lasting impression; it’s the relatable, almost ‘human’ characteristics that Janet’s subjects imply that leave us with a smile.
The finesse of Darren Gilbert’s pen & ink artworks are truly amazing. Thousands of fine dots and lines incredibly merge to compose striking illustrations; from the handsome profile of a Palm Cockatoo, to the delicate fragility of a Weedy Sea Dragon. Juxtaposed against such refined artworks stand Darren’s stately sculptures of metal & wood; dedications to his fascination for ‘rust’, discarded objects and design. Darren’s engineering skills are evident in his large-scale sculptural works which would create a dynamic focal point in any garden, whilst his smaller works bring a quirky new twist to life for recycled metal parts and reclaimed timbers.
