Janet Flinn’s passion for painting Australian wildlife grew from watching the birds attracted to local bush-land reserves and her own native garden in Melbourne, Victoria. Her paintings capture the colour, drama and magic of the unique native animals of our vast land, many of which struggle to keep their place in the present environment. Janet hopes that by engaging viewers with her art she may help to increase awareness of the importance of preserving habitat for our wildlife and encourage people to create bird-friendly gardens.
Exploring different techniques and mediums in water-colour, acrylic and oil paint, pastel and mixed media, Janet’s paintings embody the essential character of her wildlife subjects. With a necessary amount of realism combined with subtle abstraction, Janet’s paintings suggest, rather than tightly define her subjects’ environment. Opaque paint contrasts against transparent water-colour, accurate rendering against loose and spontaneous brushwork – the contrasts in Janet’s artwork create ‘life’ and excitement, suggesting the tension of life in the wild.
