Betty Mitlan has worked as a ceramic artist over 35 years. In recent years her focus has been Raku ceramics fired in a pit at her Yarra Ranges studio in Victoria. Raku fired ceramics originated in Japan in the 16th century. The firing process differs from other ceramics in that pieces are pulled from the kiln at 1000 degrees Celsius, glowing hot, then cooled in a bin of combustible materials, creating unpredictable and unique finishes.
